Best Steak Seasoning

There is nothing quite so divine as a perfectly seasoned steak.

Many times, I stick with the tried and true salt and pepper routine but when I’m really trying to wow my tastebuds, I like to mix up this simple steak seasoning recipe and I am never disappointed.

We grill almost nightly during the summer and at least once a week during the fall and winter months. We have so many favorites like these turkey burgersgrilled corn, and grilled steak salad. We also make our favorite steak marinade and chicken marinade at least a few times each month.

But the meal that gets my boys the most excited is steak night. There is nothing more delicious than a juicy, grilled steak!

What Is In Steak Seasoning

The seasoning can really be any blend of spices that complement the flavor of meat. This particular blend includes:

  • kosher salt
  • ancho chili powder
  • ground cumin
  • granulated garlic
  • coarse-ground black pepper
  • sugar
  • ground or dried thyme

It’s a really simple blend but when these flavors are combined, it creates an amazing steak dry rub that works for all cuts of steak.

How To Season Steak

Once the steak rub ingredients are mixed together, rub the seasoning generously all over the steak making sure to cover all sides.

You can also drizzle a tablespoon or so of oil onto the steak prior to rubbing in the seasoning, This serves two purposes:

  • helps the seasoning to adhere to the steak
  • adds a fat to the surface of the steak which allows for better sear marks
  • Is it 100% necessary? Nope. And I often forgo this step unless my seasoning doesn’t seem to be sticking as well as I’d like.

When you are rubbing the seasoning into the steak, make sure to really massage it into the meat well, making sure it is both evenly distributed and well covered.

What Cut of Steak Should I Buy?

There are so many cuts of steak out there to choose from and the right cut depends on many factors including your budget, preferred cooking method, cooking time, etc.

The great news is that this versatile steak dry rub works on virtually every cut of steak you can buy. Whether you’re opting for a juicy ribeye, a sensible sirloin or the luxurious filet, nothing elevates a nice piece of steak like a perfect blend of seasoning and spices.

As you can see below, I last used this seasoning on a couple of tri tips that we were grilling up over the weekend.

I just sprinkle a generous amount of the seasoning over the top of the meat and then give it a good rub.

Pop the steaks onto the grill and enjoy!

    Nothing more delicious!
